While everybody loves things that smell nice there’s good reason to avoid fragrance and perfumes in your skin care and makeup – especially if you have sensitive skin or conditions such as rosacea, eczema and acne.
Whether from synthetic or natural origin (including essential oils such as lavender and citrus ingredients too) fragrance is a skin irritant. They are sensitising and the most common cause of allergic reactions. Irritation and inflammation inhibit skins ability to heal and encourage collagen to break down leading to redness, rashes, wrinkles and seriously unhappy skin.
The effects are cumulative so may not show on the surface straight after applying if you have normal skin. However skin that’s already compromised by conditions like rosacea or sensitive post laser treatments, fragrance is bad news.
High concentrations of fragrance are now the norm in most skincare and many makeup products. So it can take quite a bit of time, research and reading labels to discover which ones are truly free from fragrance. Luckily we’ve done the hard work for you and recommend these brands to get you started.

Although acne is one of the most common skin conditions, experienced by people throughout the world, it can also be one of the most troubling. Not only can active acne look and feel unpleasant but it can also leave scars that act as a lasting reminder of this confidence-draining condition.
A number of treatment options exist for treating acne and acne scars – some are more effective than others, and individual responses can vary widely.
Laser treatments are now part of the growing arsenal of treatments attempting to banish acne. Laser therapy works particularly well when preventing the papules and pustules associated with acne but may be less effective with non-inflammatory acne and severe lesions. As every case is different, it’s important to speak to an experienced dermatologist and laser treatment practitioner to get their advice about your individual case.
